Dancing away hunger

This past March, Kellogg Community College students had reason to dance. The Tech Club held a dance fundraiser to help support the many charitable events that they sponsor. Tech Club is currently competing in the canned food sculpture contest held at Lakeview Square Mall, where, after the contest is finished, all the food that is used is donated to the local food bank and is distributed for needy families during the holiday time. The club also participates in the adopt-a-family event held during the Christmas season, where they buy gifts for the children and provide a supper for the whole family.

MCCPA Annual Press Day

The MCCPA (Michigan Community College Press Association) annual press day conference and journalism contest was held April 4 at Michigan State University. MCCPA awards for the bruin were as follows: Marcus Ervin won second place for a student created ad for Black History Month and Laura Tooze received an Honorable Mention for a student created ad for the Nursing Program.

Custodial cutbacks

In June of 2005 Kellogg Community College released a Request For Proposals (RFP) for cleaning services. It was the school’s intent at the time to transition to contracted services. The RFP consisted of sixty detailed pages to ensure an accurate bid. Over time, 13 companies responded to the RFP with their bids. From here the school narrowed the competition down to three companies, finally deciding on Omni Facility Services. This transition will become reality on July 1 of this year, resulting in a savings of about $200,000. The primary savings is not in employee salaries, but benefits.
