Counseling Services

Occasionally personal problems may interfere with a student’s ability to concentrate on classes. Talking to a professional counselor can help students clarify their thoughts and feelings, explore and create options, accept themselves, and plan changes. KCC advisors can provide you with information on qualified professionals outside of the college.

Some of life’s challenges can be addressed by personal reflection on issues such as:

Problem Solving:  Making a list of the positives and negatives outcomes of a decision will help you find your answer. Many times students try to avoid making a decision which only makes the process more difficult.

Identifying Values and Beliefs: Understanding what is important to you provides a foundation for making decisions.

Coping with Change:  Accepting that change will happen and that you probably cannot stop it, will help you to find the positive side of change. Understanding how you respond to change and looking for ways to make change work for you will help you cope with change.

Self and Others:  Taking the time to make observations of self in relationship to others can help with relationship success.

Test Anxiety:  Many times students experience test anxiety because 1) they did not put enough effort into prepartion or 2) their expections are that they must have an "A" in every course. Students can reduce test anxiety by good preparation, exercise, rest and a good breakfast. In other words, make your education a priority and take good care of yourself.
