FAST TRACK OPTION
The MLT Program at KCC is a 5 semester sequence of courses. It is recommended that all students, including those with bachelor’s degrees, apply to the regular track, which begins in September and culminates 21 months later with graduation. Applications must be completed no later than the preceding May 15 to be considered for the regular track of the program. A complete application contains official transcripts from ALL colleges attended, a high school transcript with date of graduation, and an ACT score. The ACT score can be waived for students who provide documentation of a college degree from an accredited institution.

Occasionally, students apply to the program after admissions have already taken place for the regular track. The Fast-Track Medical Laboratory Technology Program at KCC allows academically advanced students to complete the program in 14-16 months. It was designed primarily as a post-baccalaureate program but academically strong students without a bachelor’s degree will be considered if they meet the admission requirements. Fast-Track positions become available ONLY if attrition occurs in the admitted regular track class. Enrollment in the MLT program is capped at 16 students due to the availability of clinical sites. If an admitted MLT students drops out, a Fast-Track position becomes available. Because positions become available only if attrition occurs, it is usually not known until the end of the semester preceding desired enrollment whether positions will be available or not.

To be considered for the Fast-Track program, students must have a minimum of 60 college credits and a GPA of 2.50. Other requirements include:
  1. One year (7-8 credits) of college chemistry is required. This does not include preparatory chemistry, such as CHEM 10. Course combinations that meet this requirement include
    • CHEM 100 and CHEM 210 or
    • CHEM 110 and 111 or
    • CHEM 110 and 210 or
    • CHEM 110 and 201 or
    • Equivalent courses at another institution
You must earn a “C” or above in each chemistry course. These courses must be completed prior to beginning the program.

  2. Eight or more additional credits of either biology or chemistry are required prior to beginning the program. Biology 201, Human Anatomy and Biology 202, Human Physiology must be completed either prior to admission or no later than the end of the summer semester. A grade of “C” or above is required in BIOL 201 and 202.

  3. Students without a baccalaureate degree must have completed all of the College’s general education requirements by the end of the summer semester. Consult the current KCC Catalog for a listing of the courses which fulfill the general education requirements.

  4. All students accepted into the Fast-Track program must self-study MELA 100, Fundamentals of Medical Laboratory Technology. All students must pass the MELA 100 final exam. It is expected that Fast-Track students will be able to master this beginning material with minimal help from the instructor.

Students admitted to Fast-Track in January follow the regular sequence of courses and graduate 16 months later. Students admitted to Fast-Track in May start with the 3rd semester summer courses, MELA 135 and 140. In the fall, MELA 210, 220, and 235 are taken. In the spring semester, May Fast-Track students do their clinical training all day on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and take MELA 120, Hematology, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They are enrolled for 20 credits during this semester. Upon completion of MELA 120, the May Fast-Track student then does clinical training full time until they finish their clinical rotations, which is usually in mid-June.

If after reading this information, you believe that you are qualified for Fast-Track and are interested in possible admission, please call the Program Director. All students who are interested in possible Fast-Track admission MUST contact the MLT Program Director, Kay Paff, at 269.965.3931, extension 2316 for advising before applying to the program.

The “Fast-Track” still results in an Associate of Applied Science degree being granted by KCC.
