General Admissions Information

General Information and Dates pertaining to the SELECTIVE Admission Process for the Medical Laboratory Technology program:

MLT student working in lab
The application deadline is April 1 for admission into the professional coursework starting the following fall semester. Applications should be completed by this date to be assured that they will be considered for admission. A complete application contains an application form, up-to-date transcripts of ALL college work the applicant has taken, high school transcript showing the date of graduation, and ACT scores. Evidence of GED is ALSO required if the applicant did not finish high school.

By the end of April, letters will be sent to the applicants who have been selected for the program. At the same time, letters will be sent to all other applicants whose application files are complete to let them know that they have not been selected and outlining the strengths and weaknesses of their applications.

During the summer months, openings for fall may become available in the program because of dropouts or accepted applicants who fail to accept the offer of a position or fail to reply in time. Applicants who were not been selected in April are urged to continue to send updated transcripts as they become available if they are interested in being considered for admission that fall. All applications that are received prior to August 1 will be considered for late admission if a position is available. After the initial admission period, applications for any open positions will be considered in the order in which they were received.

What should I know and what do I do if I am interested in making application to the Medical Technology?
  1. You need to be aware that the admissions process is a selective one. Be sure to follow the application procedures closely and be sure that all information in your application file is complete to assure that your application will be considered. If you are not accepted but wish to be considered for admission another year, you must reapply and update your application file with up-to-date transcripts and other information.

  2. To apply, secure a college application form from the college Admissions Office. Complete that form and return it to the Admissions Office before April 1 of the year in which you wish to begin taking the professional courses in the program. It is advisable, however, to submit the form before March 1 and to get your application file completed well before April 1 if possible. It takes processing time for your transcripts, test scores, etc. to get from the Admissions Office to the Allied Health Office, and everything should be complete in the Allied Health Office by April 1 to assure that your file will be considered with the first group of applicants.

  3. Arrange with your high school to have an official transcript sent to the Admissions Office. Your high school transcript must show the date of your high school graduation. Your high school GPA earns points towards admission into the MLT program. If you did not complete high school but do have a GED, arrange to have BOTH your high school transcript and your GED certification sent to the Admissions Office.

  4. An ACT or SAT test score is required for all applicants to the program, even for those who have already taken some college courses. Arrange to have your ACT scores sent to the college Admissions Office. If you are not sure whether you took the ACT in high school, ask whether the ACT score is on your transcript when you contact your high school to have your transcript sent. The ASSET placement test is NOT a substitute for this requirement. If you have not already taken the ACT test, you will have to take it. You should be able to get information about how to apply to take it from a high school or college advising office.

Scores from an ACT test taken in December will arrive in time to be put into your application folder before the deadline. Scores from any REGULAR ACT test taken after that time may not reach us in time. Kellogg Community College usually offers an on-campus ACT test in March for applicants who apply to Allied Health programs too late to take the ACT test on regular test dates. Call the college Testing Center (Nancy Obey, Ext. 2645) to find out the date for this special ACT test and to sign up and pay to take it. Test scores from this test will reach the Allied Health Office within about a week after you take the test. These scores will not be available to YOU, however, until after they have been sent to and processed through the ACT testing agency. Also, these scores will NOT be able to be used at any other college or for any other purpose.

  5. Arrange to have official college transcripts of all college work you have taken at any college forwarded to the college Admissions Office. If you are a student at Kellogg Community College or have previously taken courses here, you will also have to arrange with the Records Office for your KCC transcript to be forwarded to the Admissions Office to be put in your file. This is a step that KCC students often overlook!

As you complete additional coursework during the period of application and consideration of your application for admission, be sure to forward updated college and high school transcripts. This is important since the high school courses mentioned previously and the college courses you complete which are a part of the KCC MLT Program curriculum will all count as extra credit towards admission to the program.

  6. Initially, after you make an application, you will be sent a letter by the Admissions staff to inform you that your application file has been received and to let you know what information is still required from you to COMPLETE YOUR FILE. A "COMPLETED" applicant file, making it eligible for consideration for admission, contains college transcripts from ALL colleges attended, high school transcript with date of graduation, and ACT scores. You will not be considered for admission until your file is COMPLETE. After the letter is sent from Admissions, it is up to you to complete your file by providing all of the information listed as still missing in that letter. If at any time you wish to check on the status of your application after you have received that letter, you may call Admissions to be sure that the information you arranged to have sent has arrived. Be sure to allow plenty of time for transcripts and ACT test scores to be received by our Admissions Office, usually AT LEAST 3-4 weeks.

  7. Initial acceptance letters are mailed by the end of April. Not all allied health programs mail letters at exactly the same time, so give us until April 30 before you contact us if you have not heard. If you have not heard the admissions decision by April 30, please call the MLT Program Coordinator to check on your status. In most cases when this happens, it occurs because the admission file was incomplete and the applicant was not considered for admission. As mentioned earlier, you may be considered for late admission if your admission file is completed prior to August 1.
