Business Management Program
Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I have to complete the entire program?
A: While it is not a condition of enrollment that you complete the entire program leading to the Associates degree, it is in your best interest to do so. Many employers are looking for an Associate degree minimum for entry level workers, and many more will do so in the future. Additionally, if you wish to transfer to a Bachelor degree granting institution, you will be much better off with a degree than without one.

Q: What are the starting salaries in the field?
A: In our graduate follow-up study, Accounting graduates reported an average earnings of $33,600 with a range from $19,000 to $55,000.

Q: When are classes held?
A: The Business Management program is delivered during the day and evening. It is also possible to take many of the courses off-campus. In addition, many courses in the program are delivered as telecourses and on-line courses. A goal of ours for the near future is to offer all Business Management courses on-line.

Q: What are classes like at KCC?
A: Classes at the college expose the student to a wide array of teaching/learning structures. Some are traditional lecture format, others rely heavily on student participation, some rely on teamwork for the completion of projects, many incorporate computer related activities, and some include all of the above. Lecture classes usually allow no more than 35 students enrolled at one time, while computer based courses enroll 15 to 18 students.

Q: What academic preparation is needed to be successful in the Accounting Program?
A: While there is no specific high school curriculum required for entry into the program, a desire to be successful and an enthusiasm for learning will carry you a long way.

Q: Can I transfer my degree?
A: Yes, we currently have transfer agreements with a number of four-year colleges and universities including Western Michigan University, Ferris State University, Tri-State University, Siena Heights College, Olivet College, and Davenport University. However, you should make your decision about transfer as early as possible because each institution has its own transfer policies.

Q: What will I do on the job when I am finished with my degree?
A: The accomplishment of an Associate in Applied Science degree will give you the opportunity to be a candidate for jobs that would otherwise be unavailable to you. You might wind up in retail as an assistant manager or manager of a store. You could become a supervisor in an industrial concern or manager in a utility company. There are a wide variety of opportunities that will become attractive to you. In all cases, you will be directing the work of the organization and of other people.

Q: Are jobs available?
A: Yes, Each year, jobs which used to be available to people without a college degree are requiring a degree for entry level applicants. And as the economic system becomes more service oriented, more companies and organizations are looking to business programs to provide them with the leadership they require for a successful future.

Q: I have been away from school for a few years, will I be able to compete with other students?
A: Yes, the average age of KCC students is 29 with some as young as 15 and others as mature as 65. Skill assessment instruments can identify any weakness you bring with you, and study skills and developmental courses are available if needed. The college also has a full set of student services to aid students with specific learning problems, and a tutoring center helps students with problems in certain courses.

Q: How good is your program?
A: The Business Department programs were accredited by the Association for Collegiate Business School and Programs in 1995. This Association is the only accredited agent for Business Schools recognized by the United States Department of Education. There are only 100 community colleges in the United States that have achieved such accreditation.

Q: Can I do it?
A: Absolutely! We will give you all of the help and support that you need. All that we ask is that you provide the determination and effort.

Q: Where do I begin?
A: Fill out an application, take the ASSET test, see a KCC advisor, or contact the Business Department at (269) 965-3931 ext. 2504 or email: washburnt@kellogg.edu
