THE LEGACY OF ALPHA NU ETA
It was in the late 1980s, and I was a student at Kellogg Community College. Carole Edmonds, then Dean of Arts & Science, told me about an honors society called Phi Theta Kappa, and asked me to check into it. Before long we were organizing KCC’s first Phi Theta Kappa chapter, Alpha Nu Eta…and I was the first Phi Theta Kappa president.
After a few years or so of learning the ropes of what Phi Theta Kappa was all about, the challenges and the benefits, (and as I was now in my Master’s program) I was also asked to become an advisor of the Phi Theta Kappa Alpha Nu Eta chapter. What a great student membership we had! Before too long and after a lot of commitment and hard work by those officers, they had attained the coveted 5-Star status. Now we were truly “PTKans.”
I am privileged, 20 years later, to remain in contact with some of those very first officers who have gone on to successful careers. Having seen and experienced what “reaching for the stars” through Phi Theta Kappa can do, I am pleased to see the local chapter continue and grow. Keep up the good work!
