Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) approved pre-service police training academy. Law enforcement personnel are responsible for conscientiously and ethically preserving order in a community. They resolve conflict, provide emergency services, identify criminal activity and offenders, investigate traffic violations and accidents, and protect constitutional guarantees in a culturally and economically diverse society. Graduates who successfully complete the state certification examination and obtain employment with a police agency within established timelines will become certified police officers. This curriculum leads to an Associate in Applied Science and is designed for career entry and/or advancement.
Pre-service Police Academy Program Requirements
Students following this degree program must complete a Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) application BEFORE beginning their first police academy course (CRJU 200, 201, 202, 204, 205, 207, 208, 212, 213, 299, and EMT 110). Application packets will be distributed on request beginning March 1 of any given year for the following fall semester. Candidates will be screened to be sure they meet the state minimum requirements and those students that meet those standards will be accepted into the police academy portion of training on a first come, first served basis. Seats in the Police Academy portion of training are limited and fill early. Police Academy students are required to purchase and wear uniform clothing. They must adhere to rules of behavior above and beyond the student code and achieve state-mandated attendance and grade requirements. A student may take as much time as necessary to work on the general education courses, but once you begin the police academy portion of training you are required by law to finish the program within one year.
