Career Pathway – Health Sciences

Radiographers are medical imaging specialists who assist physicians, particularly the radiologists, in using ionizing radiation (x-ray) in diagnosis of diseases and injuries of the human body. The radiographer operates radiologic imaging equipment under the general direction of a physician to accurately demonstrate anatomical structures of the body. Radiographers apply knowledge of anatomy, positioning, and radiographic technique in acquiring quality diagnostic images.

The Radiography Program is a two-year program consisting of four academic semesters and two summer sessions. All semesters and sessions consist of classroom lecture and supervised clinical experience in one of our affiliating hospitals. The program’s comprehensive curriculum requires the time commitment of a full-time student. The Radiography Program is approved by the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Those who successfully complete the program are awarded an Associate in Applied Science and are eligible to take the national registry exam of the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

Prerequisites
Recommended high school units of study are shown at the end of this catalog. More specifically, students with a strong foundation in algebra, geometry, physics, biology, and computers, as demonstrated in their high school curriculum or through equivalent college courses, will have an advantage as they work through the radiography curriculum.

Admission Criteria
Admission to the Radiographer program is selective. For the admission process, see page 12 of the KCC Catalog.

Students must be admitted to the Radiographer Program. Application can be made through the Admissions office. The following is considered in the selection process:
  1. GED or high school grade point average
  2. ACT or SAT score
  3. College grade point average
  4. Completion of and a grade of “C” or higher achieved in the following courses: Biology 201, Biology 202, Computer Engineering Technology 110, Emergency Medical Technician 110, English 151, Communication 101, Psychology 201, and Sociology 201.°
°Biology 201, Biology 202, Computer Engineering Technology 110, and Emergency Medical Technician 110 secure more admission points than the remaining four courses. These courses are not required for admission.

General Education
The following courses provide general skills of speaking, writing, thinking, analyzing, cooperating, making choices and judgments, integrating, and creating that are required in many problem-solving and task-oriented situations. These courses may be taken prior to being admitted to the program.
