KCC to expand Eastern Academic Center near Albion

The Easter

KCC has plans to expand its Eastern Academic Center near Albion, with construction beginning as early as this summer.

Kellogg Community College intends to build a 4,608-square-foot addition at its Eastern Academic Center near Albion, KCC President Dennis Bona announced today.

Because of growing enrollment in college courses in eastern Calhoun County and an ongoing partnership with Marshall Public Schools, KCC has determined that the EAC needs to grow physically in order to accommodate increased use. Marshall operates an alternative high school as well as the Opportunity School, an early-college program for high school students, at the EAC on weekdays.

“It is abundantly clear that there is a strong desire for higher education on the eastern side of Calhoun County and, as a partner and leader in advancing education in our communities, we are determined to meet the needs of all of our students,” Bona said.

The EAC currently serves about 250 students per semester, in addition to approximately 100 high school students from the Albion and Marshall areas who attend as part of the Marshall Alternative High School. Of those 100 high school students, 29 were dual-enrolled in college courses as of earlier this year.

“With this expansion of the EAC, we can offer more day and evening classes to our adult college students and increase the options for students who are dual-enrolled in KCC courses,” Bona said.

Funding for the estimated $1 million project will come from local grants, including a substantial gift from the Marshall-based Cronin Foundation, and KCC’s voter-approved capital millage. Pending approval from the KCC Board of Trustees, construction may begin this summer and the new wing may open in January 2014. The addition will include three classrooms, a seminar room and office space on the north side of the current facility.

The project also will enable KCC to offer classes at the EAC which, for the past year, have been offered in rented space in the former Crowell Elementary School in Albion. Returning those classes to a central location at the EAC will add convenience for students, Bona said.

Workers prepare the flagpole area on KCC’s North Avenue campus for the new state historical marker.

In celebration of its 57-year history and ongoing educational and economic impact in the communities it serves, Kellogg Community College will dedicate a Michigan historical marker April 28 on the North Avenue campus in Battle Creek.

The public is invited to the dedication ceremony at 3 p.m. April 28 at KCC’s Binda Theatre, 450 North Ave., as a variety of notable guests join in the unveiling of the marker.

Speakers and special guests include:

  • Will Kellogg III, the great-grandson of Kellogg Co. founder W.K. Kellogg
  • Jim McHale, vice president of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation
  • Mike Nofs, a state senator and KCC alumnus
  • Alice Marie Jacobs, president of Danville Area Community College and a former dean at KCC

The ceremony also will feature remarks by KCC President Dennis Bona and Battle Creek Mayor Susan Baldwin and live performances by the KCC Choral Union and Kinetic Affect. A reception with light refreshments will follow the ceremony in the newly renovated Student Center adjacent to the Binda Theatre.

“We’ve been making history at KCC for the past 57 years and we are proud to install a marker that will stand in celebration of that history for generations to come,” Bona said. “When we see the marker on campus, we’ll appreciate our relatively short history as a college and understand that the story of KCC, an institution with tremendous achievement and potential, is far from over.”

The engraved marker, authorized by the Michigan Historical Commission, commemorates KCC’s origin in a building on College Street in Battle Creek and later expansion, thanks to a gift from the Kellogg Foundation, onto the North Avenue campus. It will be installed in a prominent location near the Circle Drive in the center of campus.

KCC invites public to see new Student Services Hub

A look into KCC’s new Student Services Hub.

The public is invited to visit Kellogg Community College’s North Avenue campus to view the college’s new Student Services Hub, the first completed stage of a $6.9 million renovation project that began on the campus last August.

The Hub – which hosts the college’s Records and Registration desk and new Admissions offices – accounts for around 6,400 square feet of the total 29,000-square-foot project, which, when completed, will include a renovated cafeteria and Student Services offices in addition to the renovated Hub space.

Kay Keck, vice president for Student Services at KCC, said the completed Hub area will allow the college to better serve its students in a more streamlined fashion, enabling them to more easily complete many college processes in one location at one time.

The area includes 12 open computers for students to use to complete everything from their college application and registration to checking email and filling out their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for financial aid purposes.

Previously there was a single computer in the Financial Aid office through which students could complete their FAFSA, Keck said.

“Particularly if you’re a new student and you’re coming in and you haven’t completed any of your requirements, you can start your process right there,” Keck said of the Hub. “You can go online, do your application, and we’re in there to help if you need it.”

Two KCC staff members will be available at all times to assists students who need help in the Hub, Keck said, including an academic advisor who can answer quick advising questions on the spot.

Keck said the new space offers an expanded and enhanced version of what was previously offered through the four computers stationed in the college’s North Walkway across from the former Customer Service windows, which formerly housed the Records and Registration area.

Those computers will stay in the walkway and will be available for students to use during hours when the Hub is closed; the former Customer Service area now houses the Financial Aid offices and the Business Office.

Directly across the lobby from the Hub area is the new location of KCC’s Admissions office, which facilitates the college’s ability to meet students’ admissions needs through its proximity to other Student Service offices and also provides admissions staff with more space than they had previous to the renovations.

“The atmosphere of the new space is great,” Keck said. “Many students come in and know exactly what they want to do, and the Hub enables them to serve themselves.”

The Hub is located across the walkway from the college’s Ohm Information Technology Center and adjacent to the cafeteria, which is under renovation and scheduled for completion by the end of April. The Hub is open 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays.
