Three KCC women’s soccer players receive MCCAA honors

Three Kellogg Community College women’s soccer players have been recognized with honors by the Michigan Community College Athletic Association for their contributions during the fall 2012 soccer season.

Sophomore midfielder Aubree Cable (Harper Creek), freshman defender Abbigale Guebara (Paw Paw) and sophomore forward Elizabeth Miller (Harper Creek) received Honorable Mention All-MCCAA honors. Cable and Guebara also received Second Team All-Region honors.

Barth Beasley, head coach of the women’s soccer team at KCC, had the following to say about each player:

Cable:

“Aubree was one of the first players we signed to the women’s soccer program at KCC, which began in 2011. This year she applied all that was taught in the offseason to make an impact as our right defender/attacking mid, which was a change for her as a center midfielder. Outside of being All-Academic last year in the NJCAA, she grew on the field as well. She has offers to play in the NCAA Division II and in other conferences. Her goal is to become a nurse and we are excited for her as a captain and for the example she has set as a student-athlete at KCC.”

Guebara:

“She is a game-changer on our defense and has a lot of special moments in the game. You can see her heart and how she will change the dynamic of a game, especially when we have been down. She is a warrior that has lived up to all the hype from before she became a Bruin.”

Miller:

“Lizzy was one of the first players we signed to the women’s soccer program at KCC. She has been a leader on and off the field by understanding the only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary. This year, we moved her from right forward to left mid. The most incredible thing about Lizzy has been her dedication to knowing that she never played club ball but could achieve her goals through hard work as an athlete.”

The fall 2012 season was just the second in Kellogg Community College history for the women’s soccer program. The team finished last in its MCCAA conference but showed marked improvement over the inaugural season, when the team finished scoreless.

This season, the Bruins finished with three wins including its first conference victory in program history, defeating Jackson Community College 1-0 at home in October.

Women’s soccer grabs first MCCAA victory in program history

The Kellogg Community College women’s soccer team scored their first win against a conference opponent in the two-year program’s history yesterday, defeating Jackson Community College 1-0 at home on KCC’s North Avenue campus.

The young team with just three sophomores on the roster has shown significant improvement over their rookie year in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association, when they lost to Jackson twice, falling 0-8 in August and 0-6 in September in 2011.

The Bruins lost to JCC 1-3 in their first match against the team this season, which took place in Jackson in August.

Barth Beasley, head coach of the woman’s soccer team at KCC, said following yesterday’s win that he’d told the team beforehand he had a good feeling about the game.

“I just told them to come out and play like champions today,” Beasley said. “They’re stepping up to the definition that the only time that success comes before work is in the dictionary.”

The lone goal of the game was scored by freshman Taylor Underhill off an assist by freshman Abbigale Guebara early in the second half. Both women came to KCC from Paw Paw High School.

Freshman Savanna Lacey (Carman-Ainsworth) kept goal all 90 minutes, racking up seven saves in the process.

In addition to begin the Bruins’ first MCCAA victory, yesterday’s game was also a special game dedicated to raising breast cancer awareness. Members of the team wore pink, donations were taken at the gate to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and drawings were held for prizes for those who donated.

The woman’s soccer team plays next against Owens Community College beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at home on KCC’s North Avenue campus. The teams last met in September, when KCC fell to OCC 1-4 in Toledo.

KCC women’s soccer team loses two over weekend

The Kellogg Community College women’s soccer team had a tough weekend rounding out September, falling 0-4 to Spring Arbor University on Friday and 0-3 to Muskegon Community College on Sunday.

Friday marked the Bruins’ first game against Spring Arbor, but yesterday was the second time the team met MCC. The two tied 2-2 in their first match at KCC’s home field in Battle Creek at the end of August.

In the Spring Arbor game on Friday, freshman Savanna Lacey (Carman-Ainsworth) kept goal for all 90 minutes, defending against 19 shots on goal compared to KCC’s two.

Lacey also played the entirety of the Muskegon game on Sunday, racking up nine saves in game that saw 12 shots on goal from MCC to just one from Kellogg.

The Kellogg Community College women’s soccer team plays next against Cincinnati State Technical and Community College beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, in Cincinnati. The Bruins defeated Cincinnati 2-0 in their first match of the season on Sept. 8 in Battle Creek.

Women’s soccer defeats Indiana Tech 5-0 in the rain

Neither cold nor rain nor Indiana Tech could keep the Kellogg Community College women’s soccer team from victory at home on Friday. The Bruins won 5-0 in what was likely one of the coldest — if not wettest and windiest — contests of the season so far.

Freshman Alea Hammond (Delton Kellogg) and sophomore Aubree Cable (Harper Creek) scored in the first half, with Hammond’s goal sliding in at just three minutes into the game for an early lead. Hammond scored again in the second half, along with freshmen Haley Wagner (Hastings) and Alexandra Guebara (Paw Paw), with the Guebara’s goal bracketing the win with just one minute left in the game.

On defense, freshman Savanna Lacey (Carman-Ainsworth) had three saves in 75 minutes played while freshman Lurah Peterson (Springport) played the final 15 minutes with little action.

The team plays next on Friday, Sept. 28, against Spring Arbor University in Spring Arbor. A time for the game has yet to be announced.

KCC women’s soccer loses two over the weekend

Coming off a two-win high at home last week, the Kellogg Community College women’s soccer team lost twice this weekend, falling 1-3 to Delta College at home on Saturday and 1-4 to Toledo’s Owens Community College on Sunday.

(The team was also scheduled to play Siena Heights on Thursday, but the game was canceled due scheduling issues.)

Here are some stats from this weekend’s contests:

Vs. Delta College on Saturday, Sept. 15 (1-3)

Freshman Alexandra Guebara, of Decatur, scored the lone goal for the Bruins, assisted by sophomore Aubree Cable, of Battle Creek, in the first half. Freshmen Lurah Peterson, of Springport, and Savanna Lacey, of Flint, each kept the goal for a half, with Peterson racking up seven saves with one goal against and Lacey racking up three saves with two goals against.

Vs. Owens Community College on Sunday, Sept. 16 (1-4)

Freshman Kennedy McMurren, of Waterford, scored the Bruins only goal unassisted in the first half. Lacey and Peterson each kept the goal, with Lacey racking up three saves with three goals against in 80 minutes played and Peterson racking up one save with one goal against in 10 minutes played.

This weekend’s games give the Bruins a 2-4-1 record for the season overall and put them last in their Michigan Community College Athletic Association Conference with a record of 0-2-1.

The women have a chance to move up in the standings through tomorrow’s home game against Schoolcraft College, which is currently ranked second in the MCCAA. The game starts at 4 p.m. on the soccer field on KCC’s North Avenue campus.
