The deadline for students to apply for a Kellogg Community College Foundation Scholarship or transfer scholarship for the 2013-14 academic year at Kellogg Community College is 5 p.m. Friday, March 1, 2013.

There are more than 100 KCC Foundation Scholarships offered each year, each funded by different donors and with different qualification criteria for recipients. Award amounts vary by scholarship, with recipients determined by selection committees that consider students for all scholarships for which they are eligible.

Transfer scholarships – including the Walter and Lucille Harper Scholarship, the Virginia M. Hensley Education or Health Care Two-Year Scholarship, and the Robert F. Hites Family Scholarship – are awarded to students exhibiting outstanding academic and personal achievement who are graduating from KCC and transferring to a baccalaureate-degree granting institution.

Transfer scholarship applicants must graduate during the 2012-13 academic year and provide an acceptance letter from the institution to which they will transfer to qualify for the scholarship. A selection committee will review each applicant’s academic records along with their school, community and service activities, and if they are awarded the scholarship the award will be sent directly to the student’s transfer institution.

March 1 also is the deadline for students to apply for KCC’s new Aspiring Journalist Fund and the Stetler Scholarship for Non-Traditional Students.

Application forms for all KCC Foundation and transfer scholarships can be found online at www.kellogg.edu/foundation. KCC Foundation Scholarship application booklets for 2013-14 are available at area high school counseling departments in addition to the KCC Foundation office and other locations on campus at 450 North Ave., Battle Creek.

For more information or to contribute to scholarships, please contact Ginger Cutsinger, KCC Foundation executive director, at 269-965-4161.

KCC creates scholarship for aspiring journalists

The Aspiring Journalist Fund at KCC will award a scholarship of at least $250 each semester to a second-year KCC student who has at least a 2.0 GPA and an interest in pursuing a journalism degree.

The Aspiring Journalist Fund at KCC will be awarded each semester to a second-year student who has at least a 2.0 GPA and an interest in pursuing a journalism degree.

Future journalists are invited to apply for a new scholarship at Kellogg Community College, which added the new fund this month to its already long list of scholarship opportunities for students.

The Aspiring Journalist Fund at KCC will award a scholarship of at least $250 each semester, beginning in August 2013, to a second-year KCC student who has at least a 2.0 GPA and an interest in pursuing a journalism degree.

KCC faculty will nominate potential recipients each semester and a committee at the KCC Foundation, which administers scholarships for the college, will make the final selections. Although KCC doesn’t offer a journalism degree, the scholarship would defray costs in a student’s second year as he or she prepares to transfer to another school.

The Aspiring Journalist Fund was created by Eric Greene, who worked for 19 years as a reporter, photographer, columnist, blogger and editor at five newspapers in Michigan and Montana. Greene left his job as managing editor of the Battle Creek Enquirer in 2012 to become director of the Public Information and Marketing Department at KCC.

“Excellent journalism, because it is devoted to providing people with meaningful information and objective analysis of current events, is crucial to the future of this community and to our society,” Greene said. “After devoting most of my writing career to this worthy and necessary profession, I am delighted to set up a scholarship to help aspiring journalists pursue their goals.”

To apply for a scholarship from the Aspiring Journalist Fund for the 2013-14 academic year, students must submit an application by March 1, 2013, which is the deadline for most scholarships offered through the KCC Foundation. The exceptions are the Gold Key Scholarship, which has a deadline of Jan. 25, 2013, and the Trustee Scholarship, which has a deadline of March 28, 2013. Application forms for all scholarships can be found at www.kellogg.edu/foundation.

Shortly after the event on Friday afternoon we posted a photo gallery of more than 50 images featuring the teams that participated in this year’s event, which can also be viewed through the Facebook link above.

We’ll post more about the event over the course of the next few days, including final fundraising tallies. Last year’s Bruin Open provided 25 student scholarships through money raised from golfers and sponsorship donations from area businesses and organizations.

KCC Foundation receives $5,000 donation from IBEW Local 445

The Kellogg Community College Foundation has received a $5,000 donation from the Labor Management Committee of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 445 to be used toward student scholarships.

The donation was made on behalf of the entire IBEW Local 445 – including Current Electric, Motor Shop Electric and Union Electric – through the IBEW’s sponsorship of the Kellogg Community College Foundation’s Bruin Scholarship Open, the principal fundraising event for the organization that provides scholarships to students and grants to Kellogg Community College departments to enhance educational initiatives at the college.

Last year’s Bruin Open provided 25 student scholarships through money raised from golfers and sponsorship donations from area businesses and organizations. This year’s event will be held on Friday, Sept. 7.

“We think it’s important to invest in area youth, and this is an excellent opportunity for us to give back to our youth,” said IBEW representative Steve Claywell, who presented the IBEW donation on July 15 with fellow representatives Ken Feller and Stan Schultz.

Claywell said that the contractors who are part of the Labor Management Committee understand the challenges that youth can face finding a job.

“Anything we can do to give back to our youth is good,” he said.

Ginger Cutsinger, executive director of the Kellogg Community College Foundation – which awarded $390,000 in scholarship awards for the 2012-13 academic year – said the donation sets a fine example for the college’s students.

“We are extremely appreciative of the ongoing, strong support of scholarships from the IBEW Local 445, which in these difficult times really demonstrates an exceptional commitment to our students and our community as a whole,” Cutsinger said.
