FIRST YEAR SEMINAR

Kellogg Community College’s one-credit First Year Seminar course is designed to introduce and connect students to the KCC community and to assist students in the active development of financial planning for college and setting academic and personal goals. Students will work with instructors to learn strategies for their transition into college and to engage in building the skills needed for college success.

First Year Seminar course discussions will focus on topics including:

• Academic preparation
• Self-awareness
• Understanding of KCC services, resources and student-related policies and procedures

Course Outcomes

At the completion of the course, First Year Seminar students will be able to:

• Demonstrate successful navigation of college resources
• Analyze self-management skills and persistence practices
• Apply strategies for succeeding in a diverse society

Additionally, First Year Seminar instructors will assist students in the development of academic and social skills needed for college success, including:

Academic Skills

• FOCUS 2 self-assessment for career and educational options
• Setting SMART goals
• Using college resources
• Note taking
• Test prep, evaluation and integration
• Communicating with instructors

Social Skills

• Critical thinking
• Mindful thoughts, actions and life
• Overcoming obstacles

• Emotional intelligence
• Benefits of diversity
