Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CAD) is the process that takes place before any manufactured product can be produced. Once an idea has been conceived, a drafter/designer/engineer must create drawings that define that product. In defining a product, an extensive process of design and evaluation must take place before it is ready to be manufactured. The drafter, who is the key link in the design engineering process and manufacturing steps, must possess a working knowledge of design principles, material properties, and manufacturing processes. Functioning as a graphical communicator, the drafter uses CAD technology to produce the necessary design models and detail drawings.
KCC’s CAD program is designed to provide you with the foundation of knowledge needed to successfully function in a drafting and design environment. CAD technology is introduced at the very beginning of the curriculum and is used throughout the program for the completion of drawings. In addition, our program uses two of the most popular CAD packages in the industry, AutoCADD® and SolidWorks®, to produce all models and drawings.
Our program offers an Associate in Applied Science Degree in the CAD area. As reflected in the curriculum, drafting and design majors are required to complete a variety of technical subjects relating to design, including Materials Science, Manufacturing Processes, Mathematics, and Physics.
When you have completed the degree program at KCC, you may go to work full-time, transfer to a four-year school like Western Michigan University or Ferris State University, or do both at the same time. Students interested in transferring to a four-year institution should seek advice from our CAD Instructors about information on the transfer programs currently available.
Why choose our program?
- CAD is an exciting career area that will challenge you and is more hands-on than traditional engineering programs that have become very theory-oriented. Most of your CAD class time will be spent doing drawings, as we believe that a hands-on approach is important.
- Since computer technology and CAD software will continue to become more sophisticated and complex in the future, our program is designed to give you the kind of solid foundation you can build upon.
- All of your drawings will be CAD-based, in both two and three dimensional formats, giving you the opportunity to experience a great variety of CAD drawing tasks.
- Our laboratory houses the largest networked CAD system in this region and uses the latest hardware and software available.
