Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are good jobs available?
A: Computer-related jobs are available in almost every kind of business, industry and government organization. According to recent national surveys, computer-related jobs are among the fastest growing occupations in the United States. With the increasing use of small computer systems in the home, business and industry, indications are that the future job outlook for microcomputer specialists should be above average in the Tri-State area. If you look at the computer employment sections of the Sunday newspapers for Chicago, Detroit and Grand Rapids, you will see the numerous employment opportunities in this field.

The CET Program prepares people to seek entry-level employment in the computer field, especially as microcomputer/network specialists. Many of our students, on completion of the program, successfully take the industry recognized A+, Network+, CNE, MCP, MCSE, DBA, and CCNA Server+ certification exams. Experience and a degree or certificate, in Computer Engineering Technology/Networking could lead to such job opportunities as PC Support Specialist, Network Administrator, PC Interface Coordinator, Customer Engineer and Software/Hardware Trainer, to name only a few.

Q: How long will it take to complete the program?
A: If you can attend classes full time, you can earn an Associate in Applied Science in two years. Students who schedule classes around a job take longer to complete the program but can gain valuable related work experience while studying. Many of the certificate and certification programs and courses can generally be completed in two years or less, as a part-time student.

Q: What will I study in the Associates Degree Program?
A: Since all computer hardware is electronic, we feel that you will be a better computer/networking technician and have more flexibility in the work place if you have a good understanding of electronic fundamentals, both digital and analog. As a result, the first two semesters of the program are structured to provide these fundamentals. Your third and fourth semesters will be almost totally dedicated to applied microcomputer/networking courses. You will study computer and networking hardware and programming, PC operating systems, computer applications, hardware and software installation, Novell and Microsoft networking, computer/monitor/printer maintenance and troubleshooting, network cabling and website design. General education core requirements include English, Technical Mathematics, Physics and humanities electives.

Q: What kind of computers will I be working with?
A: Unlike many colleges, KCC has dedicated facilities for the CET Program and you start using computers in the first week of classes. In the first two semesters, you will be using the CET computer rooms and the CET electronics lab for C and Java programming, and Electronics Workbench analog and digital simulation. The CET labs contain over 100+ Pentium computers, and a large quantity of other assorted computer hardware and software, for the exclusive use of the CET students. We are continually upgrading our teaching hardware and software. Class sizes are limited to 12 or 24 students, and many labs are limited to 12, giving each student individual access to the computers and networks. Over the past three years KCC has spent over $250,000. on equipping the CET Program with state-of-the-art hardware and software, making it the most up-to-date and technologically advanced program in the State of Michigan.

Q: Do I qualify for entry into this program?
A: The degree programs require a high school graduation diploma or a G.E.D. with a background in algebra. Your skills in math and english will be measured before you enroll to make sure you enter classes at the level which gives you the best chance for success. If you already have a degree and/or computer experience, we have "fast-track", part-time, certification and certificate programs designed to expand your computer and networking knowledge. For an evaluation of your qualifications, or questions, contact the KCC Admissions Office at (269) 965-4153 or the CET faculty advisor Rod Kosmick, can be reached by telephone at (269) 965-3931 x2272.

Q: Is financial aid available?
A: Many students are eligible for financial aid. At KCC, students can apply for grants, scholarships and loans; and Work Study, a program for students who can work at the college to earn part of their expenses.

In considering you for financial aid, your entire living expenses are taken into account, including books, tuition, transportation, even child care, rent and other everyday expenses. For more information, call the Financial Aid Office at (269) 965-3931.
