Using audio recording technology
English Instructor Ron Davis

"After nearly a full semester of using the iRiver digital recorder, I've found it to be surprisingly easy to work with. Though there are several settings, I rarely use more than one because the device intuitively supports what I'm trying to accomplish. Most of the activities I use it for are rather straightforward, however."

"Initially I used it to record an entire class. I usually then would save a copy on my space on the 'academic' server so I can provide a link to it as needed. I've also used the iRiver for students to record and listen to their own writing. Here is where I've found the most use, and will continue to explore the use of the iRiver. I teach that listening to your own writing as it is read back to you is a certain way to find and correct errors in your writing, every time."

"For a student to read their paper aloud, then be able to listen to themselves reading should not only improve their writing skills, but also their vocabulary and speaking skills as they HEAR what they are writing. Many students say it's at first strange to hear their own writing read to them, but they also find they clear up many of their colloquial uses of the language that have little effectiveness in academic writing and professional communication."

"A final use for the iRiver has been for my journalism students to read their reports and have them posted to the Bruin web site. Readers can then listen to the author read his/her work. So, I've found a variety of uses for it, and hope to continue to experiment and organize these uses into a full semester of readings and recordings. I really like the iRiver digital recorder."
