Emerging Technologies from the 2010 Showcase

  • WizIQ – WizIQ is a free virtual classroom environment, especially useful for online instructors. The collaborative web conferencing tool includes a whiteboard, audio and video communication, and chat. Sessions can be recorded and put on the web for students to access.
  • Teaching with YouTube and Twitter – Twitter allows small bits of information, such as homework reminders and links, to be pushed to students via their mobile device or computer. YouTube can be used to post instructional video. Taken together reminders can be sent out to students that include instructional video that helps students with their homework.
  • Bubbl – Bubbl is an easy and free tool that can be used for flow carts, mindmapping/idea mapping and brainstorming.
  • Prezi – Prezi is a free presentation tool that allows you to present your content in a non-linear fashion. Prezi's interface is intuitive; you place all of your slide elements on a single, open canvas, and then specify the path between elements. Your Prezi presentation will then glide along the path, as well as allowing you to zoom in and out on a given area of the presentation. Slide elements can include text, audio, video and images.
  • SoftChalk – SoftChalk is an easy to use learning activities/content creation software that generates interactive web pages for uploading to Blackboard or the or your web site. Lesson features can include pop-up text annotations, self-assessment quizzes, and interactive learning games.
  • Starboard – The Hitachi Starboard is an interactive display that integrates into the presenter workstation in several classrooms around campus.  Using a pen and "digital ink",  faculty can annotate on Word, Excel and PowerPoint materials.
  • Flip Digital Camera – The Flip camera is designed to be extremely easy to use to record video and post it to the web or use it for classroom instruction. The flip camera is a "point and shoot" camera with built-in USB to connect directly to your computer.
