Blackboard – Faculty Responsibilities
* Faculty must ensure that their students are made aware of these policies.*
-
Faculty will advise students that the course is private, accessible to only the faculty, students and technical support staff.
-
The faculty must inform students of any non-affiliated persons granted access to the course (e.g. department chairs or deans). Before anyone not affiliated with the course can participate in or observe the course, he or she must obtain permission from the faculty.
-
Electronic conversation is different from verbal conversation because it retains the identity of the participant. Faculty must maintain student privacy if they grant non-course participants access to the course (e.g. guest lecturers). No student identity can be released without prior permission.
-
Faculty must request and students must agree in advance if student-created information or work will be used outside of the class (e.g. conference presentations).
-
Faculty’s management of students’ academic information must adhere to the provisions of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). FERPA is a federal law designed to protect the privacy of a student’s education records.
-
The faculty should collect the least amount of personally identifiable student data necessary to meet legitimate institutional purposes.
-
Faculty will advise the students that names of students registered in the course are listed in the course roster. Students have control over the release of any additional personal information and can change their own privacy settings.

-
Faculty will advise the students that they are not allowed to give out their username and password. A student that allows people who are not enrolled to enter the online course violates the privacy of the course participants.
-
To protect students’ privacy and personal identity, the students should be informed that they should change their default password.
-
Faculty will inform students that they will be operating under Kellogg Community College’s Internet Policy of Computer and Communications Technology Use. Refer to the “Guidelines for Computer and Communications Technology Use” for more information.
-
If faculty assign any responsibility for their course to assistants, they are responsible for the assistants’ actions and any information given to the assistants for the purpose of setting up the course. Assistants must be aware of all of the faculty responsibilities listed here.
-
Anyone interested in conducting educational research in an online course (i.e., course structure, course content, web-based courses as a learning tool), must obtain prior written permission from the faculty and students and the KCC Director of Academic Special Projects.
-
Faculty are responsible for obtaining permission to use any copyrighted material he or she might post in the course. The faculty will remind students that they need permission to use any copyrighted material the students might post in the course.
-
With the publication of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act in 1998 and the increasing online use of materials, Fair Use, as it is commonly known, and copyright law are changing.
-
The American with Disabilities Act and the Federal Rehabilitation Act Section 508 prohibit discrimination against individuals with disabilities. Effort must be taken to ensure that existing web pages are in compliance with subsections 1194.1 through 1194.22 and subsection 1194.31 of the Federal Rehabilitation Act Section 508.
