Green Computing - Information Services Department
What can you do? Reduce, Recycle, be Responsible!
Reduce
your printing
-
Consider
thoughtfully what is necessary and appropriate to print.
-
Use the
“Print Preview”
option to select only the pages you need to
print.
-
Reformat
documents by reducing margins and font size; consider printing
multiple pages per sheet, or multiple slides per page in
PowerPoint.
-
Consider
electronic methods of sharing information instead of in print
(i.e. email, Blackboard, academic web-server or CD/DVD.
-
Use the
duplex feature of your printer to print two-sided documents when
available.
-
All requests for duplication will be
completed as two-sided documents unless approved by the
department chair/director.
Recycle
waste paper
- Blue
recycling containers and brown recycling boxes are in most
offices; if you do not have one - request one from the Office of
Institutional Facilities today!
- Remember that paper collected for recycling must
always be separated from "contaminants" such as plastic
wraps, glass, or food waste.
Be
Responsible - Choose the correct printer/copier for the job
-
Inkjet
printers are conservatively about 6x more expensive to operate
than LaserJet printers. Inkjets are useful when you absolutely
need color, and for highly confidential documents but are not
appropriate for everyday printing.
-
LaserJet
printers are the best choice for most printing, but when you
have a large print job or need many copies of a medium size
print job (25 pages or more), avoid the wear and tear on your
laser printer and e-mail the job to the Duplication Center
(please remember to give 5 business days for processing).
-
Copiers are a
more cost-effective choice for duplication of small jobs (less
than 25 pages) and are less
expensive than laser printers or the duplication center for printing multiple copies of a
document.
