Kellogg Community College is hosting a daylong summit dedicated to open educational resources on campus this month in Battle Creek.

The 2017 MI OER Summit, presented by Michigan Colleges Online and titled “Harnessing the Power of OPEN: How Open Education Can Transform Our Assignments, Courses and Colleges,” will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at the Binda Performing Arts Center on campus at 450 North Ave., Battle Creek.

Registration for the summit is $40, which can be paid online at http://tinyurl.com/MCOMIOERSummit using a Mastercard or Visa or paid later via an invoice delivered to the email address used for registration.

Open educational resources (OER) are educational materials, including textbooks and instructional classroom materials like lesson plans, made available to the general public through an open copyright license. OER advocates believe such resources provide equitable learning options for students by increasing access to learning materials and reducing financial barriers, as most OER are available online at no cost.

The MI OER Summit will include breakout sessions, discipline roundtables, lunch, prizes and a keynote address from Dr. Robin DeRosa, professor and program director of Interdisciplinary Studies at Plymouth State University.

DeRosa will focus her address on open educational resources and pedagogy, presenting ideas to re-inspire a sense of mission in public college instructors along with examples of non-disposable assignments designed to get students actively contributing to the knowledge commons. DeRosa’s presentation will introduce participants to the idea of connected learning and will offer new ways of creating course architecture to better link students with their scholarly and professional communities.

The MI OER Summit is open to the general public and anyone is welcome to attend, from students and others just beginning to explore and learn to educational professionals fluent in using new technologies and/or OERs in their courses.
