Snowshoe Hiking — NEW LFIT C89A-01
Don't stay cooped up all winter! Why not get out and enjoy Michigan's other season? Join us for a winter hike. We'll tackle some local trails using snowshoes (or hiking shoes if there's no snow). Bring your own snowshoes to this unique outdoor experience. We'll stop and take in the snowy landscapes while hiking approximately 2 miles through woods and meadows each week. Your instructor has years of local hiking experience and is a former National Park Ranger. Although we will take breaks you should be fit enough for a couple of hours of moderate exercise. NOTE: This class will meet at the various trail heads, not the classroom. You will be given directions to each trail head, each week.

Do you enjoy walking or hiking outdoors, but are unsure of where to go locally? Do you love being out in nature? This class will introduce you to local trails that are available at no charge to the public. We are lucky to live in an area rich with public lands and private reserves that are open to the public, but many of them are unknown. Each week you will hike approximately 2.5 to 4 miles on one of these local trails, and we'll even stop occasionally to identify regional plants or animals and share our experience in nature. The goal is to make hiking, which is a great way to stay active and get exercise, both fun and entertaining. Your instructor has over 30 years of hiking experience, a degree in wildlife biology and is a former National Park Ranger. NOTE: Contact Lifelong Learning directly at 269-965-4134 for "couple" pricing. One person from couple will register at the $99 price and the second person's information (name/address/birth date/phone) must be provided at that time. Qigong: Nine Segment Breathing HOLV C10A-15
You can relieve stress through a simple breath technique called Nine Segment Breathing. The practice of this qigong is to focus one's mind on the breath to assist in eliminating all other thoughts during meditation. While not a specific study of Buddhism, this form belongs to the practice of Tantric Buddhist cultivation and originated in Tibet. Join us as you learn to focus on the breath while directing your energy in a methodical order through three pathways in the body. By doing this you will enter into a state of calmness. Continued practice of Nine Segment Breathing will purify your body and take you on a path towards enlightening realizations.

Aikido is a way of life through harmony with nature. The practice brings about a self confidence that helps in all aspects of life including practical self-defense situations and every day interactions and conflict resolution. Aikido improves focus, builds self-confidence, and empowers trust. Translated as: a Way of Life through Harmony with Nature; the art itself is non-competitive and teaches one to redirect the force of an attack to help diffuse it and gain control of the situation. It is not about fighting, even though it comes from the fighting history of Japan. No sparring, tournaments or competitions in this class, just learning and practicing the techniques. Come on and dive in…a lifetime of fun, adventure, memories, experiences, and new friends awaits you! Experience weightlessness like an astronaut orbiting the Earth; breathe underwater while suspended in a cool, refreshing, aquatic world. See strange and exotic fish and other denizens of the deep like only other NAUI certified divers do. The NAUI certification for SCUBA is the entry-level course in diver education. In this classroom-based certification course you will learn the fundamental knowledge and skills to safely move on to the next step in the certification process—confined and open water dives. This class will cover information on physics, physiology, medicine, and environment and is the first step in the NAUI certification process. NOTE: A separate textbook is required and may be purchased at Sub-Aquatic Sports for $40, or you can invest in a kit that includes the book, DVDs, workbooks, and dive tables for $71. Rhythms: A Walking Meditation Experience — NEW LFIT C89A-13
The spring season brings warmer temperatures, longer hours of daylight and in its wake we have the desire to get outdoors and just breathe the fresh air. This response to our bio-rhythms energizes and motivates our mind and body, especially after the long, dark winter season. Battle Creek's parks are "treasures beyond measure." Take this opportunity to explore mindfulness meditation and the unique trails and landscape perspectives of three local parks. Walks will begin at 10:00 a.m. with an observation of each park's terrain and history, and will end at 11:30 a.m. noting the "wholeness and uniqueness" of each park's design while exploring how the effect of natural settings contributes to stress reduction and our mindful connection to ourselves and our community. The parks you will explore are: Sat. March 17, Ott Biological Preserve; Sat. March 31, Woodland Park (Gethings Road entrance); Sat. April 14, Leila Arboretum (W. Michigan Avenue entrance). In this workshop you'll gain the confidence and practical skills that can help you avoid becoming a victim and learn effective techniques to fend off an attacker. Golf Fundamentals for Women — NEW LFIT C89A-18
This new class is designed for the beginner or inexperienced golfer. We'll introduce you to all aspects of the game including an overview of golf etiquette, rules of the game, the various clubs in your bag and when to use them, and the movements of putting, chipping, pitching and the positions needed for a full swing. You'll have an opportunity to practice all these new skills, too. Also, there's no need to buy a set of golf clubs: just bring a putter, a #6 or #7 iron, and a driver (#1 wood); we also recommend you use ladies' clubs, or if you only have access to men's clubs then we suggest they have graphite shafts.
