The Western Michigian University Early Reading First I CAN READ! grant will help Battle Creek Head Start classrooms become centers of excellence in early literacy instruction. Partners for the grant include WMU, KCC, and CAASCM.
The grant will provide workshops and weekly coaching to help teachers intensify their literacy curriculum and instruction. KCC instructors are invited to attend the monthly workshops, and Head Start personnel will be eligible for credit at either WMU or KCC for full participation in grant-related professional development.
In addition, the grant will purchase extensive classroom supplies and will greatly increase classroom libraries. Families will benefit from monthly family literacy nights, professional development in early literacy for Head Start family workers, weekly books home, and development of a "lending library" of home literacy kits.
The grant will fund a 5-week summer literacy camp for Battle Creek Head Start children for the next 3 years. Grant personnel will also participate in county-wide early literacy advocacy, planning, and fundraising.
