Suggestions for reading with your preschooler

First, be comfortable, cozy and relaxed - both of you!

Next, make sure your child can see the book the right way up as you read.

  • Point to the words as you read.
  • When reading aloud, don't be afraid to 'ham it up'. Make different voices for different characters.
  • Ask your child to guess what will be on the next page of the book you are reading together. Your child will learn that events happen in a sequence.
  • Talk about details and the samll changes in the pictures of the book.
  • If your preschooler gets bored and walks away, it's time to stop reading!
