Suggestions for reading with your school-age child

First, be comfortable and relaxed - both of you!

Next, make sure your child can see the book the right way up as you read.

  • Point to the words as you read.
  • Encourage your child to read along with you.
  • Show your child by the excitement in your voice, that you enjoy the book too!
  • Talk about details and the small changes in the pictures of a book.
  • Ask your child to 'predict' what will happen next in the story.
  • After reading together, provide materials for your child to draw with.
  • Drawing is a special way for your child to retell or create a new story. Encourage your child to write what his/her picture is about or you write it for him/her.
