All Kellogg Community College students have the opportunity to take private music lessons in any number of instruments and or voice. Students receive rigorous instruction from music division faculty preparing them for performance in studio seminars and master classes, recitals, auditions or for self- enrichment purposes. These are private lessons open to all interested students;
instructors teach once a week on a one-to-one basis.
For more information, contact Gerald Blanchard, Music Lesson Coordinator at 269.965.3931 ext. 2566.
These guidelines have been prepared in order to help department faculty evaluate student performance. Assessment sheets for evaluations and juries will be provided for those events.
LESSONS: Each student will receive either one 30-minute (1cr.) or one 60-minute (2cr.) private lesson per week for the duration of the academic semester.
STUDIO MASTER CLASS: Students taking lessons are required to attend Studio master class weekly. Master classes are held in the Davidson Visual and Performing Arts Auditorium each Wednesday after at 1pm.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS: All students taking individualized lessons for academic credit will perform in a minimum of two master classes and one recital every semester of study. All recital music must be presented at concert performance level - memorized and polished. At the end of the semester, the students with the highest jury level scores will be invited to perform in the honors concert.
Show up for your lessons:
a. on time.
b. prepared.
c. warmed up. You are expected to practice daily on technique (exercises) and repertoire.
You will not improve without regular practice. Remember, you reap what you sow. Most illnesses should not prevent you from practicing. Even if your voice is not functioning physically, you can still work on the comprehension of pitches, rhythms, diction, understanding the text, phrasing, and memorization. Plan ahead to avoid the conflicts that can and will occur (exams, papers, etc.).
Students may register for individual music lesson through KRIS or may contact the registration office my calling 269.965.3931. The Kellogg Registration Information System (KRIS) will allow you to access registration information through the college portal by visiting www.kellogg.edu. Once you have completed the registration, you must contact Gerald Blanchard (blanchardg@kellogg.edu) to receive schedule information.
Registration and Schedule AdjustmentsRegistration is held throughout the academic year. Specific dates and times of registration are published in the College class schedule printed for each academic period.
Drop/AddA schedule adjustment period is provided for students who have registered and find it necessary to revise their course selections. Schedule adjustments must be made within the time limits established by the College.
Grading and AttendanceIt is the student's responsibility to notify his or her music instructor 24 hours in advance, preferably in person, if s/he must miss or reschedule a lesson. Failure to do so will result in an unexcused absence and will result in a lowering of the student's grade for the semester.
Students are expected to attend all lessons, master classes, and perform in master class and recitals. Each student taking lessons for academic credit must also complete a performance jury at the end of the academic semester. Any student's grade will be lowered by half a letter for each lesson, master class, and or recital missed. If student fail to perform a jury at the end of the semester, the student will automatically fail the jury thus reducing the semester grade by one third.
Example: The student completed all requirements except the final jury. See grading result below.
Lesson: 4.0 grade Master Class: 4.0 grade Jury: 0 grade
Final semester grade: 2.6
