MANA 256 How to Plan and Conduct Productive Performance Appraisals     1 CR
This course shows you how to set realistic performance objectives, conduct effective appraisal interviews, give and receive feedback, analyze individual performance and write results-oriented job descriptions, identify employee training and development needs, involve employees in the appraisal process, and handle difficult performance appraisals. You will also learn how to plan, review, and appraise performance fairly and effectively; motivate employees to better their performance and productivity through improved two-way communications; and work with difficult employees.

MANA 257 Coaching for Top Performance     1 CR
This course provides a powerful combination of training, communicating, and motivating skills that will enable you to successfully challenge your staff to higher levels of performance. You will learn how to improve your coaching skills so your staff, both individually and as a team, can improve their performance; define and communicate performance goals using S.M.A.R.T. criteria–Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Trackable; and develop a performance improvement plan.

MANA 280 First-Line Management     1 CR
A course concentrating on the practical skills which can help supervisors handle their complicated role professionally. Areas to be covered include choosing leadership styles that improve work performance; planning ahead for maximum productivity; and handling conflicts, grievances, and problem employees in a way that ensures smooth operation.

MANA 281 What Managers Do     1 CR
This course is a skill-building program concentrating on the functions that most often determine success in management. Designed for new managers, it covers such areas as planning techniques, organizing a department, staffing, delegating, developing performance appraisal techniques, and motivating employees to perform to their maximum potential.

MANA 282 Communication Skills for Managers     1 CR
A course designed for persons whose responsibilities involve written or oral communications inside, as well as outside, the company. Includes a quick refresher in word usage, grammar, tone, and sentence structure. Other topics include listening effectively; understanding and using non-verbal communication; and giving effective, professional presentations.

MANA 284 Fundamentals of Finance and Accounting for Non-Financial Managers     1 CR
This course provides basic financial skills, emphasizing how these can be used in day-to-day decisions. Areas covered include cost accounting principles, the use of financial reports, and analyses to develop a management plan.

MANA 286 A Manager’s Guide to Human Behavior     1 CR
This course is designed to increase managerial effectiveness through an understanding of human needs and motivations. Topics will include non-conflictive communication, leadership styles, problem-solving techniques, and acceptable and effective self-assertive methods.

MANA 288 Getting Results with Time Management     1 CR
A practical course designed to show how to boost profits, production, and efficiency by taking effective control of your own and your staff’s time.

MANA 289 Strategies for Managing Stress     1 CR
Stress is inevitable in all environments. Students will learn to respond productively to problems and challenges. The course considers ways a manager can harness stress and use it for positive ends.

MANA 292 Leadership Skills for Executives     1 CR
The course explores various styles of leadership and the effects of style on employees. Focus is on choosing a style to improve communications, cope with tensions, and motivate employees.

MANA 293 Success through Assertiveness     1 CR
The course provides a background in assertiveness techniques which can be used to increase effectiveness, develop and maintain good personal relationships, and shift from habitual reaction to action.

MANA 294 Building High-Performance Teams     1 CR
This course provides a practical model for building and managing effective teams. The emphasis will be on using high-performance teams to increase quality, productivity, and profitability. Topics include building trust and confidence, group work skills, and balancing and fine-tuning the team process.

MANA 295 Strategic Long-Range Planning     1 CR
This course gives concrete guidance in developing a selective strategy that will keep surprise to a minimum, help you stay in touch with trends in your principal markets, and develop a growth plan that is consistent with corporate long-range goals. Owners and key managers from small and medium-sized businesses will find help in planning for a 1-5 year horizon.

MANA 296 Managing and Resolving Conflict     1 CR
The course provides background on factors that cause and perpetuate conflicts. It provides methods for dealing with conflicts in ways that will improve morale and build a productive work environment.

MANA 297 Writing for Management Success     1 CR
This course provides instruction in analyzing the need, organizing the material, and choosing precise words. The importance of style and tone is also emphasized.

MANA 298 Interpersonal Skills in the Work Place     1 CR
This course equips you with the hands-on tools of effective business. You will learn how to express yourself in clear, convincing detail in every report, proposal, and business and sales letter you write. Understand more of what you hear by using six basic probing techniques. Uncover hidden messages in your face-to-face conversations by reading body language, voice tones, and facial expressions. Capture attention, ensure understanding, gain acceptance, and motivate to action when making speeches and presentations. Your power to manage depends on your power to communicate.

MANA 299 Getting More Done Through Delegation     1 CR
Are you still trying to do everything yourself? This course will change your management thinking forever by helping you make that difficult transition from doer to leader. You’ll understand that, to take on more managerial and planning responsibilities, you must be able to let go of the many day-to-day tasks you’re still handling yourself. But, more importantly, you’ll learn how to delegate these tasks and responsibilities. Decide what to delegate and how to do it successfully. Match delegated tasks with abilities.

MATHEMATICS (MATH)
In courses numbered 121 and higher, students are expected to have a calculator capable of exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric computations. In courses numbered 122 and higher, meaningful computer activities using or illustrating principles from these courses will be included. Waiver of Mathematics Prerequisites: Students wishing to show competencies equivalent to MATH 97, 98, 99, 100, 101, 121, 122, 124, or 140 may do so by taking the appropriate portion of the COMPASS assessment. Arrangements may be made at the KCC Testing and Assessment Center in the Lane-Thomas Building.
