The Human Services Technician utilizes a knowledge, skill, and value-based educational training program with an integration of psychology, social work, and counseling. It also works with the concept that the human service worker is a generalist, one who can work side-by-side with many different professionals and with various client groups. Some of the groups that the technician works with in a helping capacity include children of various ages, the developmentally and mentally impaired, physically handicapped, welfare recipients, violent and delinquent youth, substance abusers, and the aging. This curriculum leads to an Associate in Applied Science and is designed for career-entry and/or educational advancement.
Prerequisites
Recommended high school units of study are shown at the end of this catalog. Certain competencies are essential for success in this curriculum and must be demonstrated prior to being accepted for admission to the program. Students who complete three units of high school English and two units of mathematics with a grade of “C” or better will have fulfilled the requirement. Students who do not have the above qualifications will be admitted to the College, but must then complete Study Skills 110 or English 120 or verify an acceptable level of competency through testing.
General Education Requirements
The following courses provide general skills in speaking, writing, thinking, analyzing, cooperating, making choices and judgments, integrating, and creating that are required in many problem-solving and task-oriented situations. Students interested in the MACRAO option must meet with the program coordinator.

To be granted an Associate of Applied Science in Human Services, the student must complete one of the following Human Services Certificates:
- Alternative Care Specialist
- Certificate in Family Studies
- Certificate in Gerontology
- Certificate in Substance Abuse
- Community Intervention Specialist
- Human Services Technician Certificate
ALTERNATIVE CARE SPECIALIST CERTIFICATE
This curriculum option is a specialized area of human services which provides the knowledge and skill base to work with children and adolescents in out-of-home placement. Students who have completed this program will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with other human service providers.
