Career Pathway—Human Services and Education
Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) approved pre-service police training academy. Law enforcement personnel are responsible for conscientiously and ethically preserving order in a community. They resolve conflict, provide emergency services, identify criminal activity and offenders, investigate traffic violations and accidents, and protect constitutional guarantees in a culturally and economically diverse society. Graduates who successfully complete the state licensing examination and obtain employment with a police agency within established timelines will become licensed police officers. This curriculum leads to an Associate in Applied Science and is designed for career entry and/or advancement. Students must complete a minimum of 62 credit hours to qualify for a degree.

Pre-service Police Academy Program Requirements
Students following this degree program must complete a Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) application before beginning their first police academy course (CRJU 110, 200, 201, 202, 204, 205, 207, 208, 212, 213; EMT 110). Applications will be distributed by the Criminal Justice office on or after March 1 of any given year for entry into the academy for the coming fall semester. Applications will be screened for compliance with state standards, and students will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until maximum capacity is reached. Police Academy students are required to purchase and wear uniform clothing. They must adhere to rules of behavior above and beyond the student code and achieve state-mandated attendance and grade requirements.

Students who graduate with an associate degree will have successfully completed the following general education core courses in communicating, global awareness, creativity, critical thinking, and healthy living.

Pre-Service Police Academy Track Courses
The following courses (except 212 and 213) are open to any student. For students working toward licensing as a police officer, state law requires:
  1. Completion of the MCOLES application before beginning your first police academy course;
  2. Possession of a minimum of an associate degree when the last police academy class is finished.
  3. All police academy classes (listed below) must be completed with 90% attendance and a “C” or better within a one-year time frame to remain eligible for state licensing.

Admission to the Associate Degree Program in Law Enforcement
Admission to or continuation in the Law Enforcement Associate in Applied Science may be denied on the basis of unique limitations of employment and/or on the basis of conviction of a felony pursuant to Section 9 of Act No. 203 of the Public Acts of 1965, as amended being Section 28.609 of the Michigan Compiled Laws and set forth in subrules (a) through (f) of Rule 28.4102 (minimum employment standards).
