(DESCRIPTIONS AND PREREQUISITES)
SSW 250 Introduction to Social Work 3 CR
This course introduces the student to the field of social work. Students will examine the origins of the profession, historical highlights, social work values and ethics, personal values, social welfare initiatives, current theories and perspectives, populations considered at risk, and fields of practice. This course is available online and is equivalent to HUSE 240.
SSW 252 Social Welfare 3 CR
Prerequisite: ENGL 151. This course introduces the student to the social welfare system in the United States and offers a multi-country comparison. Students will examine historical foundations, controversial issues surrounding social policy, the need for social welfare, and social welfare programs. This course is available online and may be substituted for HUSE 290.
SSW 254 Communication Skills in the Helping Profession 3 CR
This course teaches the psychology of interviewing, as well as the skills for conducting effective interviews. This involves the techniques for establishing rapport, developing counseling responses, identifying behavioral goals, and implementing strategies to bring about change or crisis intervention. This course is available online and is equivalent to HUSE 220.
SSW 255 Culturally Sensitive Practice in Social Work 3 CR
This course will provide the student with the knowledge and strategies to work with the various lifestyles, needs, and problems of different racial and cultural groups. The content of the course incorporates important concepts and empirical findings that pertain to cultural sensitive practice. Special emphasis is placed on techniques for gathering and organizing data, as well as understanding the process for the effective utilization of that data. This course is available online and is equivalent to HUSE 225.
SSW 257 An Introduction to Assessment, Evaluation, and Grant Writing for the Human Service Worker 3 CR
This course introduces the student to the concepts and relationships between assessment, evaluation, and grant writing applicable for the human service worker. Special emphasis is placed on techniques for gathering and organizing data, as well as understanding the process for the effective utilization of that data. This course is available online and is equivalent to HUSE 202.
SSW 258 An Introduction to Report Writing Techniques for the Human Service Worker 3 CR
Prerequisite: ENGL 151. This course will provide an opportunity for students to learn record keeping and report writing techniques needed by social workers. Because report writing requires critical professional judgment at all levels, emphasis will be placed on expanding the students' general information in the social work field. This course is available online and is equivalent to HUSE 204.
SSW 260 Human Behavior and the Social Environment 3 CR
Students will develop critical thinking skills as they evaluate and apply various human development theories to client situations. Emphasis will be placed on the relationships among biological, social, psychological, and cultural systems as they affect the "person-in-environment" and as they constitute a pluralistic society. While traditional theories will be explored, a special effort will be made to encourage students to explore "alternative theories" with respect to diverse cultures. The following social systems will be examined: individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. This course is online and is equivalent to HUSE 242.
SSW 271 Public Service Internship I 3 CR
Prerequisites: SSW 258 or HUSE 204, and SSW 254 or HUSE 220. This course is designed to provide students with "hands-on" social work experience that is consistent with their career objectives. It is intended to allow the student the opportunity to utilize the skills they have obtained throughout their curriculum within a professional social work environment. The student is required to complete 175 hours of field experience and participate in bi-weekly "class" activities that support their learning experiences in the field. This course is available online.
SSW 272 Public Service Internship II 3 CR
Prerequisites: SSW 258 or HUSE 204, and SSW 254 or HUSE 220. This course is designed to provide students with "hands-on" social work experience that is consistent with their career objectives. It is intended to allow the student the opportunity to utilize the skills they have obtained throughout their curriculum within a professional social work environment. The student is required to complete 175 hours of field experience and participate in bi-weekly "class" activities that support their learning experiences in the field.
