 Web Guidelines
The following guidelines have been set so that it is clear to visitors that any given page is part of the Kellogg Community College website. These guidelines are designed to provide consistency and continuity between your pages and others within the College web site, and will let users who access your page know that you are officially publishing on behalf of Kellogg Community College.

Logo Use
The KCC logo must appear in the upper left corner and is available on the following web page: http://www.kellogg.edu/publications/logos.html. The KCC logo is not to be distorted, color changed, or altered in any way other than those that appear on the logo page. You may also download the logo at the top of this page.

The following links must appear on all pages. It is suggested that they appear at either the top or the bottom of the page.

Effective May 1, 2003, all new or revised web pages published or hosted by Kellogg Community College must be accessible to persons with disabilities and be compliance with either:

Priority 1 Level Checkpoints of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0.

or

Federal Rehabilitation Act Section 508, subsections 1194.1 through 1194.22 and subsection 1194.31.

Copyrighted Material
The use of copyrighted works on web pages without the written permission of the copyright owner is prohibited. You should assume that another person's work is copyrighted whether or not it includes the © notice. This includes photographs, illustrations, graphics, audio and video.

  Photographs
A consent form must be signed and on file by each person whose photograph is posted on the KCC web site. Consent must also be given if using another persons’ artwork, photography or literature.

Frames
The use of frames is discouraged because of the following:
  • Frames pages do not index well with some major search engines
  • Pages cannot be easily printed
  • Frames cannot be bookmarked properly
  • Are difficult to use with non-graphical browsers

If you cannot avoid using frames, you are also required to have a non-frames version of your site.

Title
Each page should include a specific title (within the <title> tag) to describe its contents.

For example: Financial Aid at Kellogg Community College

Window Size
Web pages will be viewed on many different types and sizes of monitors. Pages should be designed to work on an 800 by 600 monitor, but will expand when the browser window is resized. Fixed width tables should be avoided because they will not resize properly.

Graphics
When graphic images are used, they should be optimized and compressed to keep download time as short as possible. All graphics should include the <alt tag> with an alternate description of its content.

For example:
<img src="kcclogo.gif" alt="Kellogg Community College logo">

Date
For timely information such as course curricula, office hours, or degree requirements, a date must appear in a prominent place on the page.

For example, see the course description page at: http://www.kellogg.edu/schedule/descriptions/grde.html

Appearance

Colors & Background
There should be adequate contrast between the background color and text color to ensure readability. Detailed graphic backgrounds make viewing page content difficult and should be avoided.

Links
Link colors on the KCC web site should be standardized so users know what to expect and will simplify navigation. The standard link colors for paragraph text are as follows:
Link color: #3333cc
Visited link: #333399
Active link: #cc0000

External Links:
Any links that go outside of the KCC web site should open in a new window.
