2011-2012

WINTER WALKING PROGRAM
February 1-April 30, 2012

It’s time again for the Winter Walking Program. This year the program will start on Wednesday, February 1st, and we will be logging our exercise for the months of February, March, and April.  Each person participating will log a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise for 3 days per week. Remember, any type of exercise is welcome. Some examples from past years are: bowling, zumba, water aerobics, bicycling and much more. Of course, as always, if you would like to do more, that would be wonderful!!  This program is open to all staff and full-time faculty. You may either use the sheet that is available for download below, or make up your own. Once the month is completed, please forward your log to Kassie Dunham, dunhamk@kellogg.edu , so your name will be entered in the monthly $30.00 gift card drawings. Those who participate for all three months will be entered in the drawing for the grand prize gift card. Hopefully this will give you a jump start on your 2012 fitness program.  You will be able to make new friends to work out with and show a good healthy example for other staff and the students.

CROSS COUNTRY SKI TRIP
Saturday & Sunday, January 28-29, 2012
Leave KCC from the Miller Building at 8 am
Join the Wellness committee, celebrating snow in Michigan (hopefully) on January 28th & 29th for a two day cross country ski trip in Grayling Michigan. The trip begins on Saturday morning; we leave KCC Miller building around 8:00 a.m. and take the college van that holds more than 20 people with Tom Rose as our driver. Arrival in Roscommon at Cross Country Ski Headquarters is just before noon; this is where you can rent ski's for the whole weekend if you'd like and then we spend the afternoon skiing on easy terrain for the first time skier and areas with a few hills for those who have been doing this for some time. We are sure to help new folks learn the "moves" if you will and before you know it you'll be scooting along down the trails. We depart for our hotel around 4:00 p.m. for a little afternoon nap and re-group for dinner later that evening. If you're full of energy at 9:00 p.m., there is lighted skiing right outside The Day's Inn hotel where we stay in Grayling. On Sunday morning we enjoy a continental breakfast and then head over to Hanson Hills Ski Area for more skiing in absolutely beautiful territory. You can also snow shoe at either location on each day.

The motel rooms are about $70 at the Days Inn, and the ski tickets for each day are about $8 each. Rental of ski's is approximately $20 for the whole weekend, so it is a relatively inexpensive weekend away. You can bring your own food to both ski resorts or you can partake of their chili, sandwiches and hot chocolate. This is truly a stunning healthy way to just embrace Michigan. If you like it, you may find yourself skiing locally at Binder Park Golf Course where volunteers are grooming trails in January and February for the community to use at no cost. This invitation includes your family as well; please contact Tom Rose or Pat Kopf if you have questions or if you'd like to reserve your seat(s) on the bus for this trip. Please sign up early and give this sport a try!
As of 1/6 there are 2 spots left on the bus. For more information contact Pat Kopf.

Summer Spectacular
Summer Thursdays, 2011
Join us on Thursdays this summer at noon and get moving. No skill level required. Come for as short as long as you wish. Looking forward to seeing your smiling faces.
June 9 - Croquet
The weather held out for a great, and almost competitive croquet game amongst friends. Ed Q. came through with the win, while Jayme McHale, Kathy Jarvie, Tonie McMaster, and Penny Rose mastered their skills.
June 16 - Wiffle Ball
- Soccer Practice Field
Again the rain held off for a ferocious game of hit and run wiffle ball. The players hit the balls so hard that all the balls were split in half by the end. Thanks to Jayme, Catherine James, Charles Bard and Barbie Madsen for playing.
June 23 - Frisbee Golf
This Thursday was a bit of a wet one, at noon the rain started coming down as we gathered at the flag pole to venture across the street to play on the official Frisbee Golf Course. Penny Rose, Charles Bard, Barbie Madsen, and Catherine James played six holes and actually stayed somewhat dry. Thank you, Sharon Powell for letting us borrow the two sets of golf discs from the gym.
June 30 - Bocce Ball
Sunshine finally! Kathy Jarvie brought her official Bocce set for us to play and it was quite the challenge. The grass was a bit long, so it was often hard to sight the small ball. Charles Bard took the lead, with Kathy and Barbie Madsen close on his tail. Then came Penny Rose (she must have been just warming up)she started to give the three of them a chase. Catherine James was well back, way too busy looking at the Blue Angels to know she was losing. All in all, it was a great lunch break, sunshine, laughs, companionship, a little competition, and the exciting Blue Angels putting on a show.
July 7 - Walking
- Spring Lake
July 14 - Frisbee
- Soccer Practice Field
July 21 - Tennis
- Miller Gym
July 28 - Suprise event TBA

ride your bike to work day
May 6, 2011
On May 6th, 2011, twelve KCC staff member rode their bike to work. It was a questionable day for weather early on (what day hasn't been questionable this month) but we decided to move forward with our plans and enjoy a ride to work. Tom Rose and Penny Rose rode Tom's recumbent tandem in from the Urbandale way, several folks road in from town, and another gang rode in from Capital Ave. SW. At $4.25 per gallon, we saved some money and some of our resources and we exercised our hearts and muscles as well. It turned out to be a very nice morning. We rode again on Friday, May 13th, sporting our new bicycle jersey's that were provided for us through Mark O'Connell and the wellness program. Thanks! We love them!

Don't forget to track bike riding for the months of May, June, July, and August and we will put everyone's name in for a monthly drawing. Turn your logs into the Bookstore.

And, such a fun way to work-out. It was the perfect activity for me to help cement my commitment to exercise in my birthday year!" We couldn't have said it better!

RIDE YOUR BIKE TO WORK DAY
August 27
On Friday, August 27th approximately 12 KCC employees decided to ride their bicycles to work. It was a nice morning, many of us meeting each other along our route in to campus. We enjoyed a little socializing when we arrived and got a picture together and talked about some tools we could use to bike safely to work. It was the day of the KCC Foundation picnic so we enjoyed wearing shorts to work and Kay Keck and Penny Rose met us with water and KCC t-shirts for our participation. Lot's of fun; saved some of us several dollars in gas, increased our metabolism so that we were burning calories throughout our morning, and our brains were operating more effectively from those good endorphin's.

Click here to see a picture of the group that rode.

maintain don't gain holiday contest
November 20, 2009-January 6, 2010
The results are in! Thanks for all you who worked hard during the holidays to keep your weight in check. We had over 40 participants. Tom Rose won an iPod Nano by actually losing weight over the holidays. His name was drawn from a group of many who either maintained or lost weight during the period of before Thanksgiving until after the New Year. He lost five pounds during that time, and is now [2-12-10] at a total loss of thirteen. He credits his ability to lose it to starting to play noontime basketball at Miller in December, and his training program for a 1/2 marathon in Bay Shore that he plans to run on May 29th.

The Wellness Committee sends thanks to the over 40 participants who signed up for this great motivating program which involved weighing in before and after the holidays, and working to maintain their weight.

Winter Walking Program
January 18-April 30, 2010
We had a total of 24 people that completed the winter walking challenge. There were prize drawings at the end of February – winner Charles Bard – and March – winner Kathy Jarvie – of $10 Laura’s Gourmet Catering gift cards. Everyone was very positive about the program and several people said that it was just the thing to keep them on track for their goal. The “hook” for staying on track for the program was a secret “surprise” which turned out to be warm-up jackets for each of the participants. Everyone was very excited to get them and they are very grateful to the wellness committee for their generous gift. There was mention from several people that we should do this again very soon

ANNUAL Cross Country Ski Trip
January 30-31, 2010
Twenty KCC employees and their family members enjoyed beautiful weather, scenery and hills on the annual Wellness Committees Cross Country Ski Trip to the Grayling area. We skied at the relatively flat but scenic Cross Country Ski Headquarters on Saturday where we enjoyed a campfire at Trapper John's Cabin in the woods and delightful loops of cross country skiing. The log cabin style lodge with rocking chairs by the fire was filled with people with red cheeks and smiles on their faces.

On Sunday, we skiied at Hanson Hills Recreation Area in Grayling. The skiing there is much "hillier" and very scenic. We skiied as a large group there as well and took folks on the "primitive" loop which is just very serene and then ended with the huge up and down hills. This is groomed skiing so it's like being on a roller coaster where your ski's are in a set of parallel tracks and they are "mostly" stuck in those tracks and you can just fly downhill if you want to. Who wants to pay Cedar Points prices when you can ski all day at Hanson Hills with just as much fun.

Saturday night was a great dinner together at a rustic Steak house. Several of the more "mature" gentlemen and ladies went night skiing on Saturday night behind our hotel on the lit cross country ski loop. We wore the young folks out; they stayed in bed and rested.

Looking forward to next years trip around the end of January, early February. Hope the word spreads that it is fun and heart healthy.
