EMERGENCY RESOURCES

This page offers information for emergency needs that arise for students outside of the classroom, including connections to  community services and resources for students with personal difficulties impacting academic success.

Student Emergency Needs

KCC understands that students have emergencies that arise outside of the classroom, and the College may help support students who may be facing certain types of insecurity. The initiatives outlined below offer assistance to currently enrolled KCC students experiencing barriers to academic success and completion. High school dual-enrolled students are not eligible.

Beyond Tuition Assistance Fund

The KCC Foundation’s Beyond Tuition Assistance Fund offers limited emergency assistance for students experiencing barriers to academic success. Funds are awarded one time and are not intended to be used for ongoing expenses.  Amount of each award is based on demonstrated emergency and available funds based on the spending policy of the KCC Foundation.

Examples of emergency financial assistance include housing eviction, utility shutoffs, basic auto repairs such as brakes or tires, household supplies in the event of loss/fire, bus tickets, food, course supplies in the event of loss/fire, and some basic classroom aids such as glasses or hearing aids. In all cases, requests must demonstrate an emergency need and that the need arose in the semester of the request. Documentation must provide details (we can not accept online text notifications). Please note that this fund cannot reimburse for bills already paid.

Applicants may also be referred to the KCC Counseling Office to explore community resources/services for their particular emergency assistance request (see Emergency Community Services below).

> Beyond Tuition Application Instructions

Bruin Basket initiative

Food insecurity is a hardship that millions of people living in the United States face, and community college students are not immune to this. The Bruin Basket initiative, which launched in June 2019, offers free grab-and-go snack options for anyone in the KCC community that may need a little something extra to get through the day.

There is no registration or intake process in order to use the Bruin Basket; just take what you need and leave what you can (if you are able.)

Bruin Baskets are located on the College’s North Avenue campus in Battle Creek in the Miller Physical Education Building, Emory Morris Library, Whitmore lobby, and Davidson Visual and Performing Arts Center lower level. They are also located at the Regional Manufacturing Technology Center in Fort Custer Industrial Park, Eastern Academic Center in Albion, Grahl Center in Coldwater and Fehsenfeld Center in Hastings.

Fresh Food Distribution

KCC’s Food Insecurity Task Force, in partnership with the South Michigan Food Bank, hosts a Fresh Food Distribution event at 1 p.m. the third Tuesday of every month on the College’s North Avenue campus in Battle Creek.

This event is made possible in partnership with a grant from the South Michigan Food Bank and is free for all affiliated with KCC. Students simply have to show up at Parking Lot G, next to the Miller Building, with their KCC ID to receive a box of fresh, healthy food (and perhaps some extra treats) during each distribution event. Note:  This service will end after the April 2024 distribution.
